Proxy stand
A proxy is a stand-in for you- something on your behalf. A proxy server is a stand in for you internet connection.
A good example of a proxy and the most common is a web proxy. When using a proxy, the server targets the proxy server, rather than redirecting to the webserver on the internet. So, while using a proxy you are connected to the proxy server rather than your web server.
A proxy server is designed to understand and know the information and data that it see’s while your searching the internet. The proxy server understands that you have a firewall on your connection, and can connect you to the internet through its private server which disables your firewall. Proxies are very common throughout the internet because they get banned rather easily from servers ( That dont accept proxies).
As you’ve already noticed, in most cases proxy servers are not used by typical internet users. There are certain situations … usually corporate, and certain ISPs that require their use. The good news is that it’s uncommon enough that if you do require it, it should be part of the setup information provided by your web hosting company or ISP.
