How to Transfer a Domain
The first rule you must know before you can transfer a domain is that most registrars do not allow any domain name to be move from one registrar to another if the domain in question is 90 days or less before renewal date. This means that if it is too late, you will have to pay for an additional year before any such request can take place. In addition, you will also need to pay yet another year when the domain name is completely transferred to the new registrar. It’s not so bad since domain names are pretty cheap these days, but it can add up if you are moving multiple names from one registrar to another.
To transfer a domain name is not difficult once you understand what it is that you need to do direct it to your new point of origin. A domain name can be registered through a third party like a web hosting company, a reseller (usually a web hosting company, but not necessarily) or direct via the registrar website though some registrars only deal with reseller accounts. If you got it through a registrar such as godaddy.com, networksolutions.com or register.com, you can request for transfers at any time. All others you will need to contact them to make any changes, amendments or alterations to the domain.
Ready to Transfer a Domain
To transfer a domain name there are some things that need to be double checked before the transfer can go smoothly. As you know, you do need to be more than 90 days away from the domain expiry date, your email listed under the domain name needs to be valid and do not change it to an email address that is the same as the domain name (always keep domain name email addresses different), you need a special EPP code (usually sent from the current registrar to the email address listed under the domain or from the third party entity that registered the domain name on your behalf) AND you need to make sure that the domain name(s) is unlocked. Now it’s time to transfer your domain name. If you bought the domain name from a third party provider, you will need to contact them and let them know that you wish to transfer the domain and they need to email you the special code which the NEW registrar will ask for. When you receive the code, give it to the new registrar and they will transfer the domain name. Now you’re done!
